Video Script:

This is Michelle.  She chose to heal after losing her brother to an accident, and after surviving a tough battle with breast cancer while mothering a toddler and an infant. You can imagine Michelle went through periods of time that were both sad and scary.

My name is Barbara J Hopkinson of A Butterfly’s Journey To a New Normal.  We help individuals and families struggling with grief to find a new normal after experiencing loss of a child or other traumatic loss.

The fact that you are experiencing something that you never thought would happen is exactly why it is normal to feel like Michelle was feeling and this is why we suggest reaching out to help others in order to help you heal.

After the loss of a loved one, when you choose an area you care about and make an effort to help others, it helps you in multiple ways.  First, it gets the focus off yourself and your pain, and shifts it to making a positive difference in the world.  Second, it makes you feel good and that is healing, Third, it reminds you to be grateful, especially when you see how grateful others are for your help.  We can help you find some options that fit your situation.

Some suggestions on getting started:
Make a list of things you are passionate about or where you want to make a difference.  They don’t have to be grief related.
Select two or three, and look into options for those areas in more detail.
Choose one to start and get involved — with your time, not just money.

Helping others has a surprisingly powerful healing impact.  It did for Michelle as she chose to heal.
