This is Mel. He chose to heal after losing her son in an auto accident. You can imagine Mel went through a period of time that was extremely difficult and sad.

My name is Barbara J Hopkinson of A Butterfly’s Journey To a New Normal. We help individuals and families struggling with grief to find a new normal after experiencing loss of a child or other early traumatic loss.

The fact that you are experiencing something that you never thought would happen is exactly why it is normal to feel like Mel was feeling and this is why we suggest using humor to help you heal.

You may think humor is a strange think to link to healing grief, but as they say “laughter is the best medicine”. A focus on the positive memories and laughing about our loved ones’ time with us is truly healing. Try it!

Some suggestions on using humor to heal grief:

• Gather a few friends or family who knew the loved one. Relax and sitarranged in a circle. Take turns telling funny stories about the deceasedperson and what you loved about them. It is okay to make fun of them!
• Start an email chain with loved ones of the deceased, have each personadd a funny anecdote or photo of that person, see where it goes!
• Set up a Facebook page in memory of the person, but seed it with lovingand funny stores, so their friends know it’s okay to do that too — it makes a wonderful memorial and reminds us of great memories!By the way, it is okay to cry in between the laughs as needed. Humor is in- credibly healing! It was for Mel as he chose to heal.
