ABJ Video Blog Series :  SUPPORT – MEET JEN

Video Script:

This is Jen  She chose to heal after losing her 3-1/2 month-old son to blunt force trauma by his father.  She packed up her house and moved cross country with her 4-year-old daughter and restarted her life, while her ex awaits trial.  You can imagine Jen went through a kind of mother’s horror, that was excruciating, and experienced fear at starting over.

My name is Barbara J Hopkinson of A Butterfly’s Journey To a New Normal.  We help individuals and families struggling with grief to find a new normal after experiencing loss of a child or other traumatic loss.

The fact that you are experiencing something beyond your comprehension that you never thought would happen is exactly why it is normal to need support.  This is why we suggest multiple types of support for Jen.

You can use help getting through the traumatic loss of a loved one, to know that you have support, and to stay strong for yourself and family members that need you.  Yet, usually one kind of support is not enough.  In-person group support allows you to connect with others who have survived. Online support can provide anonymity and discussion with those who have similar experiences.  Therapists provide skills to work through individual issues.  Action-based classes give you tools to help heal.

We suggest selecting at least two kinds of support to try, to see what suits you.  Also, if the initial one doesn’t work, try at least one different instance of that type of support before giving up on it.

Some suggestions regarding support:

  • Get referral for therapy or support which deals with grief, or specifics
  • If something doesn’t work, try another of that type before giving up
  • Once you find a good support source, stay at least 6-12 months.

Support and persistence is crucial for recovery.  It was for Jen as she chose to heal, using multiple forms of our support systems and resources.
